Round 12 4/8/07
With only three rounds left before finals are to be contended, rivalry between clubs is fierce. Many players who participated in Country Week on turf are having to adjust to the more unpredictable game on a grass surface.
Warriors 4 def Aztecs 2
In a fiercely contested game the Aztecs played a great game, a very even match from both sides. Jake Brown was great in attack with two goals and Shaylah Ward played to the wing with determination. Chloe Scott, Eleanor McKenzie and Sarah Chandler were strong in defense to keep the Warriors run at goal restricted.
Goal scorers: Jake Brown
In slippery conditions, the Warriors team played well together. Lachlan Tress scored the first goal of the game that spurred the team on. Joshua Horsburgh played a great first half. Lachlan Tress almost stopped the first goal for the Aztecs.
Nicholas Duke had a great save minutes into the second half. Kate Rinehart played a great second half. Michael Knersch had some great running between goals.
Goals scorers: Ethan Calway 3, Lachlan Tress 1.
Drouids Blue 2 def Drouids Navy 0
What a great game played between the two Drouids teams. Sara Fleming played a great game in goals, preventing many attacks by Drouids Blue. Charlie Park scored both goals in the first half, backed up well by Alice Grant, Meghan Wright and Riley Jamieson who ran hard all day. Felicity Johnson, Piper Hobson and Ebony Logan-Stoll were great in defence, with Callum Hobson and Zoe Bush covering a lot of ground. Mia Pedersen, Jacob Brookes and Robert Di Pietro worked hard for Navy and Caitlin Jones continued her good form of recent weeks. Well done to all players in a very even game.
Goal scorers: Charlie Park (2)
Aztecs 2 def Gulls 1
Aztecs fought hard against Gulls in the first half and played a good attacking game. They ultimately overpowered their opponents. Their hitting and team play was a dominating factor. Steward McKenzie was great as goalkeeper. The second half saw Aztecs playing their positions well and scoring the first goal of the match. Chloe Bourke then scored her first goal of the season and the clincher for the match. Well-done Aztecs.
Goal scorers: Michael Finger 1, Chloe Bourke 1
For Gulls, Cameron Bedford battled in defense and there were flashes of good team play by Luke McWha, Sam Tyson and Gabbie Farnham. Anthony Clapton had a tough time in the goals, but saved the Gulls from a debacle.
Goal Scorer: Sam Tyson 1
Drouids 3 def Warriors 1
An early goal one minute into the game was scored by Lauren Gooden and what a great start! Damien Crawford was kept busy and under pressure as goalie, but still producing plenty of saves for his team. A flurry of passes involving almost all players down the ground resulted in a well-earned corner. Hailey Knersch was well positioned on the post ready to score with Ellen Bulmer and Madelyn Noye passing the ball well between them onto Ethan Calway and Jack Rinehart. Samantha Taylor worked hard and low on the ball to gain many frees. A great game Warriors.
Goal Scorer: Lauren Gooden 1
Lachlan Hannah, Edward Edmonds, Jenna Pederson, Amy Pugh and Sam Watts were key players for the victorious Drouids. Lachlan displayed an array of skills in both attack and defense throughout the first half. Alec Madill put in a strong performance over the entire match and Sam Watts put in a courageous effort as goalkeeper, keeping the opposition to only one goal.
Goal Scorers: Lachlan Hannah 1, Richard Jones 1, James Pugh 1.
Gulls 4 def Aztecs 0
A boggy game started with players bunching on both sides. The undermanned Aztecs team managed to maintain attack with Michael Finger and Stewart McKenzie keeping up the forward pressure. Shannon Ward, Karen Pedder, Tayla Brown and some diving from goalie Cam Price blocked Gulls. More attacks came from Chris Cooper, Adam Smetana, Luke Taylor and Katie Finger, but Aztecs failed to convert. Eventually the Gulls’ persistence prevailed, winning a well-fought game. Special thanks to U11’s helping out: Stewart McKenzie, Dean McMaster, Tayla Brown and Karen Pedder.
Gulls played a good controlled game. Mike Krammer was on fire. Lucy Williams played the best in defense and running the ball out. Joel tried hard and improved as the game went on. Aubrey Gaylard was a very steady player
Goal scorers; Mike Krammer 3, Aubrey Gaylard 1
Drouids 4 def Warriors 0
Drouids had the early running in the first half and Warriors’ attacks were being cut off by Harry Hearn and G/K Liam Watts. Sam Atkinson and Jordon Di Pietro were doing well as the wings and inners. It was a very lacklustre first half and coach Zurrer called for more teamwork after half time. The second half saw Warriors in attack early, but William Edmonds, Rose McCormack and Harry Hearn held strong in defense. Sam Watts at centre half had some good attacking runs allowing the goal scoring machine Matt Zurrer to score three times and Lachlan McLean, on the wing, scoring another. Warriors’ last attack before the siren was well stopped by Goalie Liam Watts. Well done to all the team.
Goal scorers: Matt Zurrer 3, Lachlan McLean 1
Gulls 6 def Aztecs 1
A good controlled game by Gulls against an undermanned Aztecs team, who fought determinedly and, to their credit, scored one goal. Aztecs were ably led by Jake Griffiths and Matthew Taylor. The “birthday girl” Mel Whitehead worked tirelessly in goals and Beth Chandler played a magnificent team-game on the wing and was rewarded with the Most Disciplined Player award for her team. For Gulls, Wes Dowel dominated and Ashley Gaylard showed great class. Grace Gaylard and Michael Wyhoon played hard. Natalie Tyson and Lauren Grigoleit appeared in the right spot at the right time. Both teams are to be commended on the spirit in which the game was played.
Goal Scorers; Ashley Gaylard 2, Wes Dowel 1, Michael Wyhoon 1, Natalie Tyson 1 and Lauren Grigoleit 1.
Drouids 7 def Warriors 1
Again playing excellent hockey and combining marvelously as a team, Drouids dominated their game against Warriors to win seven goals to one. Kate and Lizzie Christian, Dean Gallagher, Georgie and Bronte Hobson and Aaron Calder were prominent in a number of positions and provided great drive for Drouids and goal scoring opportunities. Coach, Jevan Leggett’s match instructions were carried out perfectly. Michael Dobson [2 goals], Julian Hannah [2] Sam Stenson [2] and Penny Johnson [1] were dynamic when up forward. This young team and its coach continue to impress with their regular interchanges and positional set plays. Penny, Dylan and Luke continued their excellent form.

Gulls def Aztecs 6-0
Great team work in slow conditions although the score didn’t reflect this, the Aztecs team really displayed some terrific skills and were unlucky to convert the many attempts at goal. Leigh Childe did a fantastic job coaching, reading the players and the positions well. Well-done Michael Dunlop in his first game, positioning and using the stick (instead of racket) skillfully. Patrick Childe defended well with Jasmin Allan backing up wonderfully. Congratulations to Matt Taylor for receiving Most Disciplined Player this week.
Gulls 8 defeated Aztecs 2
In a good team performance Gulls defeated an undermanned Aztecs. The first half was close. The Aztecs became fatigued in the second half as they tried to cover the Gulls scoring options. Ben Hallyburton converted well and Mark Freestone and Dordy provided good options all game.
Goals: Ben Hallyburton 3, Andy Armstrong 2, Michael Ballantyne 2, Mark Freestone 1
For Aztecs, only eight players against a very strong Gulls team, but Aztecs managed to score a few goals. New player Michael Dunlop was “run off his feet”.
Drouids 2 drew Warriors 2
The cold weather meant that all players had to keep moving to stay warm, which wasn’t difficult with both teams under-manned. It was more like a game of tennis than hockey with the ball moving freely from end to end. Alistair Wright played well for Drouids up forward and Michael Smythe (GK) made some great saves in goals. The final score line was two goals all, with John Thomson and Paul Kramer scoring one each.
Gulls Gold 4 def Drouids 0
Drouids Blue played an excellent open game against the strong opposition of Gulls Gold. Drouids were undermanned, but fought hard in defense, stopping many opportunities at goal. Drouids tried hard to get the ball into the D but lacked the drive of a centre- forward. Particular mention to Heather Fleming with some magnificent saves in goal.
Great team effort Gulls girls. Gulls Gold scored four goals with wonderful passing. Nicole Fitzpatrick scored three and Kristy Deighton with her first of the season. Halfbacks, Robyn Follett, Rachael Kelleher and Kylee Hunt were powers of strength. Helping with the strong forward line was also Wendy McLean, and wing, Lynette Anderson.
Aztecs 2 def Warriors 1
Although undermanned, with two under 15’s, Stef and Tori, playing up, the team worked together superbly! Awesome goal keeping by Melissa, and a strong push forward by the forwards, in particular Penny Rowe and Aleisha (who scored both goals). Sam, Kerry and Gabrielle backed them up beautifully. Although we missed our regular players, the team pulled together, and played a strong game, in defense and attack.
