Round 5 19/05/07
In the West Gippsland Hockey Association, the age groups to watch are U15s and Senior Mens. A score of eleven is almost unprecedented in this league on a forgiving ground at Bell Bird Park. Senior Mens were credited with this unbelievable score as were U15 Aztecs in a display of superior skill with a score of 7-0.
Drouids Navy drew with Warriors (2 all).
Fantastic consistent team work by Meaghan Wright, Charlie Park, Callum Hobson kept Warriors scoring to a minimum. First goal scored early by Charlie Park was countered by Warriors Ethan Calway to have a half time score of one all. Great attacking b y Mia Pedersen and a hard fought goal by Callum Hobson backed by Zoe Bush.
Awards to Felicity Johnson and Piper Hobson for endurance. Many thanks to Gordon Hobson for this encouraging coaching.

Warriors’ first half was very competitive with both teams attacking very well. Ethan Calways scored for the Warriors. The team really played well in defence and are starting to play as a team in attack as well. Kate Rinehart was very effective in pushing the ball. The second half was exciting with both teams continuing to play effectively across the field. A draw was a fitting result.

The Aztecs back line of Cameron Price, Ryan and Shannon Ward worked hard to stop Warriors from scoring. Katie Finger and Chris Cooper showed great speed and position. Luke Taylor and Sarah Howard kept driving the ball forward through the Warrior’s defense. Thanks to under 11s Chloe Bourke, Brooke Hamilton and Micheal Finger (goal keeper) for helping the team out.

A much better showing by Warriors this week resulted in a very entertaining match. The first half with Aiden Cumming & Jacinta Brown repelling the well tuned Aztecs attacks, which resulted in Brendan Noye & Samantha Cumming turning defence into attack with Maddie Noye being very lively creating a few scoring opportunities. Unfortunately a little lapse in defence allowed Aztecs to score a goal late in the half. The 2nd half was highlighted by Damien Crawford who was like a terrier with his attacks on the ball & Nicholas Brown as goalie that made some amazing saves to keep the score line respectable.
Gulls 5 def Drouids 1

Sam Lodge showed skill and agility in the goals against the strong Aztec attack. A very accurate pass from Stuart Rayner to Millie Finlay, who showed great effort in running to almost score.
Although scoreless, the Warriors tried valiantly and had many opportunities set up by Sean Bulmer, Rebecca Wardell and Jack Trippett.
Gulls 6 def Drouids 2
A hard fought match today saw Gulls defeat Drouids, with the latter maintaining constant pressure; the final score not being truly representative of the effort. Great team work displayed by all Gulls with key players being: Ashley Gaylard, Grace Gaylard and Michael Wyhoon. Will Abbott showed that being in position pays off with a score of 2 goals. Single scores to Ashley Gaylard, Lauren Grigoleit, Aubrey Gaylard and Melinda Kemp.
The young Drouids were competitive all match, but found Gulls in top form. Midfielders Penny Johnson, Dylan Thompson , Nicole Cooper and Luke Jamieson played very strong hockey, won a lot of the ball and enabled Julian Hannah to have a number of successful scoring opportunites. Dean Gallagher continued to play wing to coach’s instructions. GK Evan, saved some terrific goals, but loose manning-up in defence meant he was always under pressure. Aaron Calder played admirably in his return from injury, whilst Leah Holgate showed form whilst playing at C/Forward, a new position for her.
Coach Jevan Leggett and assistant Tom Copping were excellent in their interchanges.

Aztecs players ran hard and fast with Jade Whitehead, Sam Hill & Jessie Ward displaying solid team work. Inspirational play by Sam Nap saw a fabulous goal finished off by Leigh Childe. Patrick Child (GK) and Lucille Hazeldean thwarted many attacking moves by Warriors at the Aztecs defence line. The individual endeavor of Aztecs was excellent, and the backing up by team members was rewarded in a skillful game that resulted in a draw.

Drouids
Drouids played well; the whole team tackled well, passed well and had many attempts at goal though were unable to score. They faced a tough opposition who outscored them on the day, but the outcome could have been different had not a ball bounced off the post in a goal chance and also for the good defence of the Gulls goalie.
No Gulls report & no score reported
Ladies
Gulls Green 2 def Drouids 0.
The first win for the season saw a rejuvenated Gulls Green team repeatedly attack Drouids in the first half with Cathy Gower scoring the first goal and Emma Wallin later threading the ball past the goalie for Greens’ second goal. Warriors 2 defeated Gulls Gold (0)
Gulls Gold half-backs had a lot of play in the first half. Gulls Goalie Mel Forth tried hard, but against quality opposition she found it difficult to stop the ball every time. Full backs Sue VanHout and Jane Rees were strong in defence. Good effort girls.
In a great team effort, the Warriors players worked together to score; the original pass coming from the backline, team passing and then the conversions in the forward line into the goals. Alana Taylor, Wendy Taylor, Kylie Crawford, Janet Boreham, Renee Radford and Lauren Brown combined well on the forward line, passing the ball and using the individual skills and strengths of each of player. Janelle New, Rachel Taylor and BJ Martin combined in both attack and defence to move the ball allowing all players the opportunity to excel. The ever- reliable fullbacks, Kym Rinehart and Cathy Horsburgh, combined well to fend off the attacking Gulls and placed the ball to their teams advantage from free hits.

The Aztecs team was depleted due to injuries and work commitments. Towards the end of the game, Warriors dominated, scoring further goals. Chris scored late in the half to round off his hat trick.
