Round 7 2/6/07
Sunny conditions were ideal for all involved in the Junior games of Hockey last weekend, but deteriorating weather provided slippery and challenging play for the Senior games. Players have been selected for the representative Country Week teams to compete over the coming long weekend and in preparation, all are involved in serious training regimes.
Warriors def Aztecs 6-0
Aztecs focused on their defensive game as a superior Warriors scored four goals in the first-half. Teamwork and determination kept them to only two goals in the second-half. Jake Brown was unlucky not to score a goal after two fantastic runs down the field. Great defensive play by Sarah Chandler picking up her man and sticking to him. Good effort.
Drouids def Aztecs 3 – 1
Drouids started off strongly in attack and were rewarded by an early goal to Lachlan Hannah. Alec Madill and Sam Watts were great in defense and Danielle Cooper was solid in goals. Early in the second half, Jacob Bush and Richard Jones, combined well to score a great goal. After a strong clearance from defense, Richard Jones scored again. Thomas Park was in the thick of things and Mitchell Park ran hard all game. Strong defense late in the second half saw Drouids come away with a good win.
Goal scorers Lachlan Hannah 1, Richard Jones 2
Aztecs started the game a little slowly, but warmed up to a well-played game with Ebony Scott and Stewart McKenzie moving well with the ball. Liam Robinson worked well in the defense and Karen Peddar did a great job in goals. Michael Finger finally converted a great goal after several good tries were thwarted by good Drouids plays. A strong game with all players holding their positions. Thanks to U11 players, Shayla Ward and Sarah Chandler, for helping out.
Goal scorers: Michael Finger 1
What an exciting match of skilful hockey. The Gulls were hard pressed by the Warriors, but the defense of Cameron Bedford and Jessica Ross was magnificent. Jack Farnham played well in the midfield, but it was the running game of Sam Tyson (1) and Alex Bedford that continually punctured the Warriors defense.
Great defense by Damian Crawford and Samantha Cumming in the back line for Warriors. Solid midfield play by Gemma Rinehart. Great running in the forward line by Lauren Gooden and Fletcher Boreham saw the score at half time as nil all. The second half saw Jack Rinehart come alive for a fabulous effort feeding the forward line and a great run down the field by Ellen Bulmer. Impressive first game by Brenton Lowes and goal keeper Ethan Calway.

Aztecs 2 def Drouids 1
With the sun shining brightly Aztecs played a great defensive game with fabulous work by everyone. The second half saw Aztecs working well and holding their positions well. Two goals were scored for the game with quite a few attempted-goals failing to be converted. Great work by Bethany Chandler in goals and happy birthday to Maddy Higgins.
Goal Scorers: Georgia Irwin, Melanie Whitehead
Drouids are to be commended for the excellent improvement, as displayed this week as opposed to the last tussle with Aztecs. Drouids’ midfield was terrific all day. Inners, Nicole Cooper and Brayden Hatfield, played really tight, accountable hockey, whilst Luke Jamieson (1) and Dylan Thomson constantly drove Drouids into attack, where Kate Christian and Leah Holgate looked dangerous. Georgie Hobson was terrific on the wing as were Lizzy Christian, Gk Michael Dobson and Sam Stenson across the back line. But for some indecision, when Drouids backs thought they had been awarded a free only to see Aztecs play on quickly and score, this would have been a one-all draw. Thanks Keshia and Matt for again ‘ playing up.
Goal Scorer: Luke Jamieson 1
Gulls 2 Def Warriors 0
Gulls, playing a strong defensive game with great teamwork, were encouraged by the fantastic goalie, Ben. Improving players this week were Stephanie Gardiner and Melinda Kemp.
Pulling off the goals this week were Natalie Tyson (1) and Wes Dowel (1).

Aztecs def Drouids 3-2
Lively play by Aztecs was rewarded with a goal in the first half by Jamie Cochrane from a penalty stroke. Leigh Childe threw himself fearlessly at the ball, following through with many long hits. Good thinking by Sam Hill resulted in careful passing of the ball. Sam Nap applied pressure to the opposition while Steph Crookston and Jasmine Allan were aggressive in defense – coming out to meet the ball. The highlight of the game was the thoughtful game play between Aztecs players. In the second half, Jade Whitehead, who showed excellent game play throughout the whole game, put a strong hit away. The other goal scorer was Leigh Childe.
Goal scorers: Leigh Childe (1) Jade Whitehead (1), Jamie Cochrane (1)
The Drouids team worked together and scored early, with a well-controlled ball taken up the field and scored by Leigh Jamieson. Jevan Leggett near the end of the game took the second goal. All players today made great use of teammates; positions and passed the ball up and down the field with skill. Goalie Shane Vincent prevented Aztecs from gaining too much advantage by kicking the ball back away from the goal several times.
Many thanks to the U15 players who joined U17s.
Warriors 2 def Gulls 0
The game opened up with both teams firing. Michael and Hayden persistently attacked the ball, sending it towards Warriors goals. There was consistent defense along the back line by Clay, Daniel and Shaun. Great teamwork, including some valuable contributions from some U15 players, including Rebecca and Samuel, kept the Gulls from scoring in the first half. Andy, the coach, as always passed on some valuable encouragement and a few extra tips to the team during half time. In the second half Michael scored an impressive goal off a short corner. Murray and Rachel were consistent down the wing and BJ kept the pressure up in offence. Lyndon skillfully deflected a goal attempt by the Gulls. A spectacular set up by Michael allowed Hayden to score Warriors second and winning goal for the game. The team is going from strength to strength each week, resulting in some very pleasing wins against formidable opponents.
Gulls were a little flat footed in their loss to Warriors. There were flashes of great hockey, but consistency was lacking. Determined efforts were evident from Tiarna Kramer, Chris Miles, Matthew Vorbach, Peter Eshius and Kasey Crestani. Laura Court was courageous on the post looking for a nick from a blistering shot at goal.

Gulls 2 defeated Warriors 0
In a good team performance, the Gulls tirelessly put the highly skilled Warriors under pressure all game. Ben Hallyburton was dangerous on the wing and made the most of his scoring opportunities. “Dordy” played straight and hard and Mark Freestone opened up the game with precision passing.
Goal Scorers: Ben Hallyburton 2
A very undermanned Warriors team played hard and well as a team with many shots on goal. Although making most of the play they were unable to put the goals away.
Aztecs 4 def Drouids 3
It was a very even game with the ball spending equal time at each end of the dampened field. Chris Garden and Alister Wright played well for Drouids in the midfield providing some hard hitting. John Thomson and Chris Addison also had plenty of the ball in the forward line. It looked like a draw would be the result until the Aztecs scored a goal from a penalty stroke with seconds to go.
Goal scorers; Alistair Milne John Thomson Alister Wright.
The game was very even with open hockey being played in damp conditions.
Drouids scored first, but a good team goal slotted coolly by Leigh evened the score at half time. The second half saw some good team play. Brian Taylor and James Leitner did a great job in defense and Jamie and Paul were playing damaging forwards roles. With the scores level, Aztecs were awarded a penalty stroke right on full time. Chris calmly put the ball between the goalie’s pads, resulting in Aztecs first win for the season.

A great game was played by all and half way through the second half the second goal was scored by Kylee Hunt (normally playing halfback). Well done everyone.
An enjoyable even game was had by all. Particularly strong defense by Heather and Rose Fleming, Rhonda lane, Helen Dionysopoulos, Kim Maas and Nicki Cann. Lovely running play by Angela Brown, Lorraine Tyson, Becky Smythe, Meg O’Brien and Justine Gooding. Also well done to Claire Wigglesworth for her effort in goals.
Warriors 3 drew Aztecs 3
This was a very hard fought out match in very cold and wet conditions. The surface was slippery and made conditions dangerous at times. Lisa Hatfield scored three beautiful goals and was unlucky not to score more. Well done everyone.
Lisa Hatfield: 3 goals
A fantastic game between the two top teams, with Aztecs keeping the pressure on Warriors throughout the match to end their long winning streak! Goalie, Melissa Scott made some fabulous saves and was helped in defence by Jackie Mowat and Cassie Jolley. Rowena Beck stepped into defence after her sister Penni left at half time, and played brilliantly. Jan Park’s hitting was strong and lead to her scoring a goal. The other two goals came from Kerry Irwin’s lovely tap into goal and from Alicia Wood-Davies, who was tireless in attack. Gabrielle Higgins tackled well and is a great addition to the side. Aztecs have come together well as a team and look forward to their next encounter with Warriors.
