WGHA Press Release

Round 9

Drouids continue to impress as they dominated the game in all age levels throughout the day. They will be hard pressed to repeat this winning streak in following weeks particularly as there is a two-week break, punctuated by the Country Junior Championships being held in Melbourne during the first weekend of the school holidays. In this event, our juniors who usually rival each other will join forces to form some impressive teams that are expected to dominate the championships.

Gulls 4 def  Aztecs 0

An undermanned Aztec side showed great determination and stamina throughout a very tough, hard game. Aztecs never gave up and put every effort into making this an exciting game. Defenders Liam Robinson, Karen Pedder, Dean McMaster, Stewart McKenzie and Tayla Brown showed great skill in defending the goals with U9s Jake Brown as Goalie. Many thanks to the U9s who stepped up to play: Shaylah Ward, Billy Cochrane and Sara Chandler.

Dominating Aztecs this week, Gulls were in fighting form with the ball hardly penetrating the Aztec forward area. Showing fine skills in the mid field was Luke McWha and continuously attacking the Aztec’s defense was Sam Tyson playing a great game. Playing her best game of the season was Gabbie Farnham and always in the play was Jamie Hallihan. Scoring the goals to bring Gulls out with a win were Sam Tyson, Alec Bedford, Jamie McWha and Jamie Hallihan.

Drouids 3 defeated Warriors 0

Warriors greeted two new players this week, Ryan Ahern and Kyle Winfield, who both performed well to compliment the strengthening Warriors teamwork.  Birthday girl, Maddy Noye, was brilliant with numerous displays of skilful attacking and several good runs at goal.  It won't be long before she breaks through for a much-needed goal for Warriors. The forwards ran with the ball well, with Ethan Calway taking the ball full length of the field on a couple of occasions.  Goalie, Jemma Rinehart, was put under pressure again and again by a strong Drouids attack, but kept a cool head to stop a couple of near goals.  Damian Crawford and Fletcher Boreham both displayed maturing teamwork and tactics to help keep the ball well forward for much of the game.  Warriors are clearly starting to develop into a strong and coherent team which will definitely pay off in the not-too-distant future.

Tara Pederson's rebound defensive work off the half -back line resulted in Drouid's first goal.  Tara passed to sister Jenna on the left wind, Jenna in turn looked in-board to Richard Jones who accepted Jenna's pass and slotted a well-drilled goal.  The 1/2 time score was one nil in favour of Drouids.  The first half started with Warriors having more of the ball in attack, but unable to convert.  The goal drought was broken when Jenna Pederson posted up for a Richard Jones pass and converted.  The skill development in Drouids players was really evident.  Many thanks to coaches Alec Zurrer and Deb Wiglesworth.

Gulls 5 Def Aztecs 1

Aztecs, even though taking the field with only eight players, should be proud of their performance. They were pushed by a strong opposition, never giving up. They gave 100%. All players continuously ran the field and great desperation resulted in a goal to Leesa Crookston from a pass by Luke Taylor. Shannon Ward continuously fed the ball up forward with Chris Cooper and Katie Finger running it towards goals.

Goal scorers: Leesa Crookston 1

The Gulls proved their strength this week. Jake Hallyburton did some great runs up the field scoring two of the goals for Gulls. Great passing forward between the half backs Jessie Dent, Aubrey Gaylard and Ryan Wearne meant the ball was always up forward giving more chance to Gulls. Michael Kramer played goalie this week showing his usual panache letting only a single goal through.

Drouids 3 def Warriors 0

Drouids displayed great teamwork, with all positions contributing to keep the determined Warriors goalless.  Lachlan McLean had an outstanding match on the wing, aided by key forward Matt Zurrer.  Awesome Alyce Hatfield was prominent in both attack and defense and Telese Lane and Liam Watts shone on the backline. Ashleigh Beca and Claire Jones continue to show improvement each week.  William was outstanding in goals.

Goal scorers: Lachlan McLean 2 Matt Zurrer 1

The Warriors with their blend of U11's and U13's have shown great improvement this season, going from easy beats to really worrying the other teams. Playing a full strength Drouids, they created many more scoring opportunities than Drouids with five or six short corners and one penalty stroke. Unfortunately, Warriors couldn't convert these chances unlike Drouids who made the most of their limited scoring opportunities to score three times.

Aztecs team played a great game even with many of our team unavailable.  Thank you to all the Under 13 player who filled in for us.  Well done to Georgia Irwin who was this weeks Goalie.  She did a great job protecting the goals, only allowing a few through.  Madaline Higgins played an outstanding game with some fantastic stops and forward play.  Although the score was against us, it still was an impressive game with a lot of play in our forward line.  Aztecs were unfortunate not to convert a few attempts. Well done to all our players for their continual effort throughout the game.

Drouids 3 def Warriors 1

Drouids continued their recent good form and dominated the match. Coach Jean Leggett and assistant Tom Copping handled the many interchanges in an excellent and equitable fashion. Julian Hannah, Lizzy Christian and Brayden Hatfield all scored a goal each after excellent teamwork further afield provided them with opportunities. Brayden’s goal, from a scramble near L post, was a highlight.  Defenders Penny Johnson, Evan Urquhart and Bronte Hobson were hard at the ball and played close to their opponents. They provided great assistance to Michael Dobson who had an excellent game as goalkeeper. Kate Christian was a focal point for moves forward.

Goals Julian Hannah, Lizzy Christian, Brayden Hatfield.

Gulls 2 def Aztecs 0

The Aztecs team was firing on Saturday. Aztecs players ran hard and fought with Georgia Irwin, Jamie Cochrane and Leigh Childe displaying solid team work. Stephanie Crookston showed what could be achieved with determination as she stopped many balls from becoming potential scores for Gulls. Jade Whitehead played a fast and skillful game on right inner. Many attacking moves by Aztecs were thwarted at the last line of the defense keeping the Aztecs scoreless

Regrettably, a serious injury was incurred by one of our key players. Apart from that, it was a free flowing game that showed great teamwork. James Meaker & Lauren Grigoleit scored a goal a piece to take Gulls to a 2-0 win over Aztecs. Apologies to Matthew Vorbach for being the only team member not mentioned last week.

Women

Aztecs 3 Def Gulls Gold 0

Beginning the game a little sluggish was Gulls Gold this week, but as time went on so did the improvements within the team having had two weeks off. Welcome to the team this week was U15’s player Stephanie Gardner playing a fantastic first seniors game. Gulls Gold were very persistent in their pursuit of a goal, but just missed a few times. Although this was an unfortunate attempt they never gave up trying the entire game, fighting hard all the way.

With better conditions this week, Aztecs were able to play their running game to good effect. Alicia Wood-Davies’ hard fought attacking was rewarded with the three goals. Rowena Beck played a good game in defence with reliable back up from Cassie Jolley and Gabrielle Higgins. Both Robyn Ridsdale’s and Jan Park’s strong hitting drove Aztecs into attack on many occasions. Kerry Irwin continues to shine in a new position and Colleen Crookston is gaining more game sense. Melissa Scott made some great saves. Happy 21st Birthday to Penni Beck.

Warriors 12 def Gulls Green 0

A cold start to the game, but Janelle New scored the first goal and second goals of the match and went on to score two more in the first half. Great defending by Kym Rhinehart, Catherine Horsburgh and goalie Tracey New.  Bethany Martin, Kylie Crawford, and Catherine Campbell tackled ably. Lisa Hatfield held her position for the whole game.. Rachel Taylor, Lauren Brown and Chris Hobbs each scored one goal. The winning Warriors were leading, 7 – 0 at half-time. Amazingly, Janelle New scored her fifth in the second half. Wendy Taylor tackled well, as did  all Warrior players. Wendy Taylor fell over trying to get a goal, but didn’t succeed. Rachel scored another goal leaving the Gulls goalie diving unsuccessfully to save the ball..  Kym Rhinehart scored her first goal for the season. Jo Knersch scored the final goal. It was an exciting game.

Despite being under manned with only eight players Gulls Green came out defending extremely well. During the second half, Gulls Green pushed hard and got the ball up to force a few short corners, but were unable to score. Kathy Gower, Emma, Michelle, Jenny Miles, Browen, Melinda Kemp and Sarah Miles all played a fantastic game. Great enthusiasm from Casey, who played a fantastic game in goals, managing to stop many attempts as the goalie for the first time this season in seniors.

Drouids 3 def Warriors 2

A vastly undermanned Warriors side battled manfully against Drouids. Everyone from the team ran hard all day. Two good goals in the second half to Kris Breardon and Andy Messer almost evened the ledger. Some great keeping from Lyndon Calway kept us in the game.

The Drouids go into the three week break having re-claimed top position on the ladder after a strong win against the Warriors.  Sam Hannah and Brad Moyle played well and, in his first game for the seniors, Tom Copping got plenty of the ball.  Dan Wiglesworth was a key contributor to the scoreline, passing the ball to Alec Zurrer and Alistair Milne for their goals and scoring one himself.
