Wintry conditions prevailed this week but did not deter the league of spectators which regularly travels to Bellbird Park Drouin to watch our local hockey. 

 

Under 9

Drouids Navy 2 defeated Gulls Green 0

The overcast and chilly morning did not affect the enthusiasm showed by Drouids Navy. The team was working well under the terrific leadership of coach Julian Hannah, especially new players Charlie, Piper, Alice, Isaac and Lachlan.

Gulls Green goalie Alec Bedford made a great save early on in the game. Cameron Dyt assisted with great passing and Gabbie Farnham was excellent in both defence and attack. Go Gulls Green!

Warriors 0 drew with Aztecs 0

This was a keenly contested game where both sides were strong in defence. Warrior’s goalie Jacob Brooks did a great job and was ably assisted by Fletcher. Lachlan Tress played well in his first game.

Aztecs fought hard and despite a strong assault on goal by Jake and Tayla Brown, were unable to score. Shaylah Ward led a determined defence to keep the game scoreless despite a late onslaught by Warriors.

 

Gulls Gold 3 defeated Drouids Blue 1

The undermanned Gulls Gold grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat in this hard fought game. All played exceptionally well. Goal scorers: Luke McWha 2, Jamie McWha.

Drouids coach Alec put Todd McLean at fullback who was dynamic saving 4 goal attempts in the first half. Zoe Bush was terrific in defence and attack. Goal scorer: Riley Morton.

 

Under 11

Drouids 2 defeated Warriors 1

Drouids played a very focused game, highlighted by excellent stopping and passing so as to make opportunities for attack. Prue Grant’s persistence showed her to be the improver of the week, while Sam Watts was inspiring with a sideline run on the wing.

Warrior's Chaylee Brownbill did a great job trying to push the ball forward and Hayley Knersch, Stephanie Needham and Georgia Gooden are to be congratulated for their combined efforts in trying to score.

 

Gulls 2 defeated Aztecs 1

A first-class hitting and running game produced the chances for the Gulls in this very even match. Key players for Gulls were Evan Tyson, Nic Noll and Cameron Bedford. Goal scorer: Evan Tyson.

Aztecs played a determined game with all players continually putting pressure on the opposition. All players ran the field with forwards Michael, Katie and Shaun, assisting in a fine goal to Adam.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Under 13

Drouids 5 defeated Warriors 1

Penny Johnson, Keisha Leggett, Matt Zurrer and Sam Stenson combined well to provide constant attack for the Drouids team. Defensively Kate Christian, Nicole Cooper and Aaron Calder were steadfast. Great win to Drouids.

In very slow and trying conditions, Warriors found it hard to display the flowing teamwork that has been their trademark this season. Jack, Shaun, Samuel and Nicholas tried hard all day to set up many opportunities but found it difficult to convert. Goal scorer: Nicholas Brown.

 

Aztecs 4 defeated Gulls 1

This was a hard fought game with both sides looking for a win. Great passing and continual running up the field resulted in 4 great goals for Aztecs.  Half backs Josh Ryan and Madeline did well in pushing the ball up forward to the dogged attackers.

Wet, cold and raining was the order of the day but the kids revelled in the mud. Michael was very unlucky not to be paid a certain goal, but kept trying throughout the game. Lauren never gave in, Stef was always supportive and Kelsi Bayels played an awesome game. Keep trying Gulls!

 

Under 15

Gulls 3 defeated Aztecs 0

Tiarna and Lara showed great skill to send the Gulls forward with a fast running Ewan, Wes and Peter in support. Natalie and Sarah were in the thick of things all game while Ricky and Michael were strong in defence. Mel ran all day displaying some sensational ball skills.

Aztecs had a slow start to the game but Leigh Childe showed great strength in pushing the ball forward, well backed up by Matthew Taylor and Jason Paul. In the second half Jake Griffith and Dana Howard tackled well. Overall a good game was played.

 

Drouids 3 defeated Warriors 0

Drouids showed great teamwork using their positions to their best advantage. Tom Watts tirelessly played well throughout the game while Claire Wiglesworth, Michael Dobson, Katie Jamieson and Georgie Hobson tackled confidently and passed the ball cleanly into play.

 

Under 17

Drouids 4 defeated Warriors 0

Displaying great teamwork, Drouids provided their forwards with numerous scoring opportunities. Goalie Shane Vincent stopped many shots on goal. Goal scorers: Liam Dillon 3, Tom Watts 1.

Warriors played a valiant match with 8 players to 10. Clay Beasley and Andrew Harrison played strong hockey and Cassie Baker showed skill and determination in her first game back after injury. Drouids were kept to 4 goals to 1 in an exciting fast moving match.

 

Gulls 3 defeated Aztecs 0

Gulls recovered from a slow first half to show good teamwork and determination throughout the second half. Emma Wallin, Todd Beasley and Matthew Vorbach all had cracking games. Matt Waller showed great skill in finding the right place to be in at the right time.

With each game this group of Aztecs U17’s is developing an awareness of each other’s game play and using this to their advantage. Sam Nap played an excellent game and the whole defence line should be congratulated in keeping Gulls scoreless in the first half.

 

Women’s

Drouids 3 defeated Gulls Gold 0

Drouids women produced their first win of the season with goals to Becky Smythe, Stacey O’Brien and Sheree Thomson (all in the second half).  Helena played well on left wing and Jess, whilst it only being her second game, showed great improvement. Well done by all!

Gulls Gold played a fantastic game against strong opposition. Fullbacks Jane Rees and Janine Douglas held to the best of their ability while Robyn Follett and Wendy McLean played great games at half back. Thanks to Mel Forth for filling in from the U15’s.

 

Warrior 5 defeated Aztecs 0

Calling and passing were the highlight of Warriors victory over Aztecs. All players played a great team game with the defence being led superbly by Kym and Catherine. Goal scorers: Kerrie Armstrong 2, Janelle New (an amazing solo goal), Joanne Knersch and Rachel Taylor.

The undermanned Aztecs worked well as a team to try and thwart the constant Warriors attack. Melissa Scott was outstanding in goals and continues to improve each week. Jan Park and Jackie Mowat’s defensive skills got a good workout, both showing tenacious tackling.

 

 

Men’s

Warriors 2 drew with Drouids 2

Undermanned Warriors launched a gallant assault in the mud and drizzle. Jim Zurrer was flawless at half back and Scott Marks scored the 2 goals for the blue and white. A dominant effort in the 1st half however towards the end of the game the legs fell from underneath leaving the score line even.

It was a hard fought game on a soft water logged ground. Strong defensive play from Mick Smythe (GK) and Chris Garden kept the ball out of the goals. Many scoring opportunities were created by the younger players while precision passes by Jaiden Leggett and Dan Wiglesworth to Alec Zurrer produced the 2 goals scored in the dying minutes of the game.

 

Gulls 11 defeated Aztecs 0

Undermanned Aztecs played good team hockey and individuals showed improved skill for periods but could not sustain the pressure against Gulls. Key players: Eric Farmer and Paul Black. Improved players: Morgan Pallut and Brendan Stammers.
